I think that it should be an automatic response to any pm's. It could be another option on the chat settings with some indication on the header bar, for example... ...It could also be an additional line displayed on the status box when you right-click someone, although I would prefer not as it opens you up to abuse by people who can't even be bothered to talk to you.
