PLAYER CHARACTER: a character in a video game or role playing game who is controlled or controllable by a player
By old-fashioned definition this is a 'video game', in which players are controlling one or more avatars, which is always a form of ROLEPLAYING.
Even if I would play myself in this game (which is not possible because this is a different (virtual)reality where fe. other physics apply...): 
-I'm still playing a role!
-my avatar does not exist outside this game.
-although I tend to keep my real life separate, I sometimes discuss real-life topics in chats, depending on the mood where I'm in
I like the freedom in this game, the freedom to dress like you want, to play who-ever you want to be at the moment, 
and more-or-less to do what you want to do - as long as you're not spamming or harrassing and treat other players with respect.
@Khallum Troy: your understanding of role-play is that certain rules have to be followed, like a certain type of behaviour, dresscodes,
 and playing a role which is bound (and limited) into a certain context or setting. There are some rooms in this game which are clearly
 setup for RP purpose, but it depends on the room manager on how strictly the RP 'rules' are to be followed.
Also, this game has a sexual orientation, RP rooms can have some kindof BDSM flavour.
Maybe you're better off with games like SecondLife, if you take this all (too) serious...

What are yourself ?

Your self awareness, your ID ?
Or what your sense of self is based upon, your inherent accumulation of knowledge, your thought behavior, your memories ?
They can`t be trusted either as numerous neuroscience researchers have proven over and over.
You have roles you’re born into, such as a son, daughter, brother, sister, man, woman, father, and mother. Then there are roles you choose to take on, like a student, employee, boss, entrepreneur, friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, and wife.
Additionally there are roles with labels that you may resonate with, such as a charity worker, environmental advocate, political party supporter,  a sports fan or a person that role play as a cop in a sex game, making your role play in the game a part of a role you play in real life.
Some of these roles we choose—because they are an expression of our values, or because they seem exciting or pleasurable. But many of the roles are roles that were chosen for us or are ones we fall into unconsciously—because we think it’s “what we’re supposed to do” or because we don’t know anything different.
To achieve success in the role you play, having certain qualities is helpful. Often it is about finding and possessing the right combination of qualities to truly embrace your roles. For instance if you are into sports it is quite helpful to have physical attributes that can assist you, but it is not an absolute and there have been many cases trough the ages that prove this in both ways. The ones that looked like they would do great in sports and did not and the ones that superseded all expectations and their physical short comings by sheer will.
What they have in common is that they both fall into the “what we’re supposed to do” category.
And who pushed them into this category ? Maybe the parents, filling the holes in their own role, by fulfilling their own desires trough their offspring, killing a whole flock of birds with one stone trough the successful parent role, the "i was never any good, but my child is" role and amongst the many others an seemingly altruistic one where you are simply glad your child is healthy and happy, but is it though ? Is there such a thing as true altruism ?
Friends maybe, both conscious to fulfill their friend role and unconsciously trough the "monkey see, monkey do", in this case friends that fill their role better than one self does, or maybe the ever increasing pressure to be ... something.
They are all still roles we play in order to find our way trough life and back home.
Or to use the words of one of my favorite musicians Marina Diamandis :

I understand what Atle is saying and Atle is correct in that most people in 3DX and platforms like it are roleplaying in some way, even if they have no idea what roleplay is. 
Its obviously not a structured or typical roleplay as most of us RP'ers know it, but unless you use your real name, real pics, and explain in your bio exactly who you really are, then you are by definition, roleplaying.

I see several rooms that plays 70's 80's 90's and 00 Rock every day, all day, and i mean every day all day, starting with Australia and Rock with the Minxes where i often go when i have my morning coffe, to Eu and when people from US log on there are literary a ton of them, so they do exist, no matter where you are located.

Started playing with the idea a while ago - thought the Row and the Tetterby Hotel might make for good locations. But then I got sidetracked by mocking up scenery.
Anyways, I thought I'd share the idea and a screen dump to see what people might make of it?

I haven't seen a reasonable reply yet. But, it turns out that the game will initiate an animation when the person proposes to you. This means, you cannot have another animation going at the same time.  In other words, the two of you should just be  standing close to each other.  When the option to propose is selected, the animation will begin.

3dX really doesn't need that.
I do miss being able to design my own clothes in 3DX. But I don’t miss stores.
The 3dx Community offers many things that don't cost anything.
That's how it should stay.

I've been around the game for a little more than two years.  Maybe that's peanuts to some of you so maybe my opinion doesn't hold as much water.... but I think the game as is- is barely treading water and I don't think a poorly implemented store is going to fix that.  It is going to take more effort from the Dev team to actually make significant improvements and more frequent updates.  We have had what two updates in the last year?  One being a quite minor one at that.  And it is not just the issue of the timing of said updates.  The quality of them at times are pretty spotty at best.  Every single update I have witnessed has also added issues and bugs to the game.  They seem very slapped together at times with little concern to the finer details.    
I also don't see a real thought-out development path.  Many ideas just seem slapped together and half-baked with little thought how they will actually work in game and seem to be implemented poorly.  The vast array of vending items being one those things.  Sure, it added a few checkmarks to an already thin update.  But in all reality how it was implemented leaves quite a bit to be desired.  Many of the animations for them are janky and the underlying idea of payment and xgold transferring for said purchases seem just tacked on. 
Get the basics tight and well done and the rest will follow.  The Devs seem really scattered brained on what to implement and just seem to slap together random things that aren't completely thought out just for the sake of being able to say well they added "something".  

Or they could just hire someone to do a few new items every month for sale, it`s not like it`s a new idea, they used to have several different people making things for them.
In most games today, you buy the base and then they release a DLC or have micro transactions. Even AAA games have it as it is highly profitable, both as single player games and subscription based ones. WoW makes more money on micro transactions now than they do in subscriptions. So does FFXIV and they also have different types of subscriptions to accommodate "everyone`s" wallet, with a base game on the bottom and added clothes, items and perks for the more expensive ones.
I dunno ... I do know that the whole "get a pose or two, a few new items for the girls, maybe one for the guys and then wait for half a year before the same happens again " gets old, so maybe it`s just an " I`ll welcome anything new" thing.

They already selling the name tag that "everyone" said they did not want, but then they wanted it anyway when the price went down. People also use real money to buy items, furniture and rooms to get something they want and some use real money in the form of xgold to buy sex ...
I still think the colored name is dumb, so l don`t use it, i can build what i want my self and getting some virtual dick is really not a problem, so that just leaves clothes, and i would honestly buy them if i liked the look, assuming they where not "rented" like the colored name or some sort of VIP pass and the quality was better than most of what we have now.
It would have to be clothes only though, `cause if you start to sell poses it will be an even bigger "who has the biggest dick" competition, when some rooms owners and the cliques they "affiliate" with would buy it all, while others would "have" to in order to "compete" and others would use it as yet another reason to quit the game entirely if they could not afford to.
I`ve often spent weeks running the same dungeons over and over in a "ton" of games to get the outfits i wanted, and i often buy DLC`s for them if there is anything i like, and if there is nothing i like, i mod the game and make an outfit my self, but that`s a bit harder here, so yeah i would buy clothes.

not to blame or recommend... but if devs can sell some official 'vip outfits', it won't hurt . Of course... if they still being so... slow? the situation won't change at all
On the otherhand—— a player store might sounds good but could lead to disastrous situation like imvu and SL: copied item everywhere, and everything charges. But indeed it will make the updates go faster... hard to choose x.x
