USA arrived late to the War, and whould have been even later if not Japan had forced them to join it. ☙𝔼𝕩❧
Have you seen the Soviet pictures ? They make it about politics. Read history. Cuz Soviet Russia was winner in this war . I know history . Not what was written in the history of other countries . Try asking those who lived at the time what it was like in that time and most will tell you it was a good life (about Stalin) .I don't think that someone from outside can judge . robo
I WOULD like to say Happy Anniversary!!!!!... also , to celebrate, here in Canada what we call VE- Day, or Victory in Europe day. A day of celebration even thought it took tragically tens of Millions of lives around the world, but brought an end to manipulated populations in different parts of the world, brain washed from controlled Ideologies and fascism...... I would like to mention and Honor my Countries role, the young nation of Canada in the liberation of Europe from fascism, and its tyranny. First of all, tipsy,..... Canada, Not only Great Britain, played a huge role in many key areas, and campaigns to free Europe from fascism. Yes , the US, did not enter the war in Europe, until much later, almost half way through the war, but it was Canada who was helping and supplying her sister, Great Britain in her war effort to fend off the Nazis, and by this time most of western Europe was occupied by the Nazis, so great Britain was cut off and alone. France was already occupied, Dunkirk had stranded hundreds of thousands of allied soldiers on its beaches for evacuation, an essential evacuation, of which composed of what was left of the British army, some French, polish and other troops that frantically needed to get off the beaches, or it could have perhaps been the end of the war for the allies. I have to say that this was an incredible feat of the French people to try and muster any thing that floated to get so many off the beaches and on to England for safety. Canada, at that time was a tiny nation of only 11 million or so, whom had no navy prior to the war, was all of a sudden responsible to build ships, tanks, supplies, and train airmen, seamen, and soldiers from small towns and villages across this massive country called CANADA and send them over seas to a continent that many would never come back from. Canadian Airmen, in which by the way, about a quarter of the airmen, fighting to defend the skies of England in the battle of Britain were Canadian, part of the RCAF that came to help and defend England against great odds, and with such few aircraft remaining. Canada would also help utilize its new navy, to help protect and send much needed supplies and eventually a whole Canadian Army to England, otherwise, without that help and those supplies from our convoys, it was a constant battle against U-boats in what would be called the battle of The Atlantic, England would have starved and probably fallen, and the allies would have never been able to use England as a staging point to eventually invade Normandy and finally push to end the war in Europe. Canada, had many victories and a lot of bloody campaigns in helping to free Europe, a lot of these so called men going over seas to help what was left of Europe were just boys, one of which was my own grand father who had fought to help liberate Italy, Italy to many is a forgotten Campaign, it was even more bloody and brutal then the D-day landings, also of which Canada was a key player in Normandy in helping to push the Nazis back away from the coast. Canada, and Britain were responsible for a huge section of Italy well the US, was responsible for another, the Canadians mainly, did most of the fighting and had tens of thousands of causalities along the way up through Italy, but about 60 km, from Rome were pulled back, so Patton and Montgomery could march in, and then the Canadians did, or were allowed to behind the American and British army in the middle of the night, after all their fighting and sacrifice were not honored the way they should have been. The Honor would however come back in spades when the Canadians went into the Netherlands and were responsible for the liberation of the Dutch, after some 6 to 8 months of bloody fighting. I have to say and find it wonderful and gratifying to this day the Dutch people still appreciate, and honor the sacrifice of so many Canadians to help free them from the Fascism. robo
OK Mike, Tipsy everyone,...... never mind ones own opinion, about what was or is, what happened, or did not happen ..... your own beliefs, or political ideas, and many that will be based on ones countries interpretations of all the facts etc etc...The point is many, many MILLIONS LOST THIER LIVES, in a war that affected practically every place on the planet, and not one country was completely safe or unaffected by that war, and the fight for ideologies especially in Europe and North America
Cordelia
This topic is not for debate and policy, this day is Holy and memorable, if you don't agree keep it to yourself. Sounds like a Russian to me btw robo, VE day was May 8th. May 9th is to celebrate the Russians' view of events which, as we all know, given their activities in Ukraine, can hardly be relied upon. Macca
I think its a bit unfair to use current affairs in a topic like this.. The 'facts' of what happened is written in history.. The facts, not peoples opinions etc are there for everyone to read.. I have my own opinions on the matter, having read the facts, but wont share them here.. This is not the place to debate who did what during WW2. Here is the history http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union_in_World_War_II#cite_note-144 Have a read and make your own minds up.. Lets just remember those who died and carry on hoping that it never happens again.. Abbey, chaostika, SteveM and 1 other

Cordelia
Not sure you intended that reference Macca but the paragraph containing Note 144 says... After the capture of Berlin, Soviet troops reportedly raped German women and girls, with total victim estimates ranging from tens of thousands to two million.[144] During and after the occupation of Budapest, (Hungary), an estimated 50,000 women and girls were raped.[145][146] Regarding rapes that occurred in Yugoslavia, Stalin responded to a Yugoslav partisan leader's complaints saying, "Can't he understand it if a soldier who has crossed thousands of kilometers through blood and fire and death has fun with a woman or takes some trifle?"[146]
robo
Cordelia, and all, listen, the whole WAR was absolutely horrible, I don't care what day you celebrate, what event for what ever....I think the point is, here we need solidarity between all people and nations who fought and died in that war. this war should never be forgotten, never to forget the stupidity of war, and that WAR kills many, and that incredible massive war effected all, and that it caused the world a lot of destruction. I think it is mind boggling that such a mass war happened, and not once, but twice, this should make us all rethink about what it really means to remember and why we should... Cordelia
Lol! I'm just displaying the reference that Macca posted ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union_in_World_War_II#cite_note-144). Don't blame me. I am as firmly opposed to violence as anyone possibly can be and I believe the words of Santayana who wrote (in The Life of Reason, 1905) “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
Macca
Taken from the other VE day thread.. Couldn't agree more.. I agree for those that do not know the history it is worth reading and learning about it. Much of history is forgotten or glorified. Nations take and remember and celebrate what they want to. History and truth should be learned from for the future not used in ignorance. Abbey ♡ And.. please take into context the reference I made.. Its easy to pick and choose what parts of it you want to share as a demonstration of what happened.. The following line is also in there: "World War II was especially devastating to Soviet citizens because it was fought on their territory and caused massive destruction. In Leningrad, under German siege, over a million people died of starvation and disease." Lets just remember those who died and be thankful it ended.. There is no need to bash specific nations up. I odnt think any nation was 100% innocent during the war.. What happened then should not be a reflection on who we are today (my opinion).
