British Punk Is Not The Same As American Punk

This is a topic that came up with some friends over last weekend and has rumbled gently, 'cos they're firends, since. I thought it would make a nice aside for here and the forum users could help resolve the dispute between my friend and my husband.

My friend's view, which I tend to agree with, is that the two cannot possibly be the same as British Punk came out of the dire political situation pervading 1970's Britian. Reflecting the sense of alienation of young people at a time of high unemployment. She also says that she remembers that as a child that the weather was always 'total shite' .................................................  She rather wound up my husband by saying that The Ramones sold out as soon as they decded that stripped back rock n roll was commercially viable.

My husband's view is that it all started in the USA as a reaction to the rather over indulgent rock culture created by the 60's and early 70's bands and that politics was nothing to do with it. I sort of agree with him too. He says that the British Punk Movement rode off the back of that and added politics later.

So what does everybody here think?

Interesting, Rob. I didn't know that. It does kinda support my friend's view that Punk isn't really Punk without the politics attached to it. My friend was aso talking about 'Rock Against Racism' and how a lot of bands at the time were heavily involved in that.

So let's have a few examples, Mar .................... anybody?

That's ace, Mikey. I suppose if we're going to do a 'my Dad was there' thing mine would suggest :-

I've been doing a bit of nosing around and found this article - https://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/9923-the-story-of-feminist-punk-in-33-songs/

Which, I think, shows the across the trans Atlantic nature of things and that normal politics wasn't the only thing people were pretty pissed off about.

I put my last penny about "punks".

Looks like punks not about music genre, because we can hear different sound from different ages/years. Iggy Pop, Nina Hagen,The Exploited, The Sex Pistols, Ramones, Green Day, Off Spring and so on.

They are singing not always about politics and some of them hate it. But as one of my friends(from this genre) noticed, it`s always about freedom, independence, manners and self expressions. And often about alcohol or drugs x)

Just thinking that it would be nice to have someone post a few US punk bands - I don't know enough to try. It'd be good to hear what other countries were getting up to as well. After a lifetime of being brought up to love Etta James, Gladys Knight and others I now discover my Dad is a closet punk :-)

Many of the early Seattle Grunge bands were punk bands, or at least heavily influenced by punk.  Some will argue that Grunge "Brought punk to the masses," much to the bands' chagrin, since most of them didn't want to be popular.  But early Nirvana (pre-Nevermind) was pretty punk.  So was Soundgarden's first album.  Not so much Pearl Jam.  And some of the lesser known early grunge bands, like Mudhoney, were really punk.

I know for me, the attitude all seemed to start with Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, and from there grew into the shock value of the New York Dolls. But, then I grew up with the greatest band of all time, right from home here in Canada, the Forgotten Rebels.

From there, Robin Black and the Intergalactic Rockstars was just a natural progression.

But, of course, those classics like the Pistols, Ramones, Dead Kennedies, they always hold a special place.
