Personally I understand and appreciate this policy because if you look at places where infinite customization is possible (such as Second Life), the place is full of ugly and weird avatars. Fact is not everyone can design a nice avi, just as not everyone is good at home decor or painting or fashion. That might sound elitist, but what draws me to 3dx is how damn pretty it is. Everything here (especially in 2.0) is absolutely gorgeous, and I for one wouldn't want it getting cluttered with unattractive avatars. I see enough unappealing people in real life without having them invade my online fantasy world. All that being said I would recommend that you add a beard and dress conservatively, in addition to having grey hair, if you want your avi to look older.
