Does Anyone Play As Themselves?

Well, hypothetically, I see nothing wrong with it.

Anyway, why would they ask?

Does the magician in Everquest ask whether you are a female dwarf monk in real life before going into battle?

Apart from that, lol, "continuing and getting what you want from them," in the context of your question, sounds rather sexist to me.

Absolutely nothing I have said could be taken as being sexist, I have not in any way discriminated between genders or sexual preferences and never would.

So please do not try to turn this into another sexist thing.

What you said there is actually insulting and you had no grounds what so ever to say that I was being sexist in any way.

As you have chose to be insulting, I will tell you this.

"From the context of things you have said" you have me believing that it is very possible that you are one of these old men masquerading as a young female trying to take advantage of the young in the game.

I could not see a any girl my age saying that she would think it is ok for some person in their 60s to trick them into believing they are in fact a young person so they can have sex with them.

It is your phrasing "getting what you want from them" that I felt was sexist. Generally, it is the sort of thing that is applied to males, rarely to females.

You can believe whatever you like about me, Twiggy. I take everyone at face value. After all, it is a fantasy game.

The OP, who seems to have been inactive over months, had probably his reasons for this.

But well, I do believe the focus should be on the title and even his post as in :

"In majority of the adult games I've played I always encounter role players and hardly any real people as in someone who acts and talks like themselves. Those who do not pretend, do not fantasize, do not lie. Is there anyone in 3DX Chat that be themselves? Just how many are there compared to those who decieve roleplay? State how you play, tell why, and what you think about those who lie and those who be themselves."

That way no party will feel attacked in the discussion.

If this turns into yet another one on one fights over the same ole, which it seems to be happening... this topic will end up closed like those previous topics.

Nothing will change here , at the start is visible provocation . This topic has already married the wrong man . I mean the discussion has gone in the wrong direction .

We're talking about what to call Rplayers liars it's not right . Someone says about 60 years old mens and about their plays as young girl . Connection lost .

Those who will be viewing topic will look at the first post and it will provoke a similar situation again . Why need to keep the provocation on the forum ?

To answer the topic question no one plays as themselves. Ever. Even if they think they do. In order to play as yourself you would have to free yourself from all ego and truly understand what it is you are. I don't and I'm pretty certain it will take a lifetime of study.

In every social situation you naturally adapt to the context and the people around you. In a business meeting you act differently does that mean you are a liar. No, it means you are adapting to a social context. Even among differing groups of friends you will be acting differently depending on who you are with. There's plenty of research on this aspect of our behaviour. Look it up then answer truthfully that you genuinely actually know who you actually are.

Of course deliberate deception isn't the same but again ask yourself... Have you ever comforted a friend, have you ever told your side of the story of a breakup, have you ever encouraged a child. You have almost certainly lied here and in real life but to see that you have to understand what illusions you tell yourself and others. And it's ok a person that never ever lies and tells the whole truth all the time is not a good person at all and you'll find a trail of broken hearted and upset people behind their wake.

Still I suspect the questioner is really asking... Are any of the women actually women? Some are but many are not. That's the wrong question in my view. The right question is how much does it matter, to you, personally? If you have many partners here and this thought upsets you maybe you should rethink one or the other a little. Because it is certain that most of your female partners have been men.

Does that make them liars, sure, from a certain point of view. Are they deliberately setting out to harm you... No of course they aren't . This is a very nice illusion. Of course some people maintain that illusion. But it will remain an illusion nonetheless.

And we return to context. The context is they play a young attractive woman, almost certainly 2 or 3 of those are untrue but contextually I would not expect them to answer any differently.

But people who deliberately manipulate in order to harm or get their way... That's surely a bigger and worse problem than this sideshow about gender identity.

As a person I am very much myself, I would find it difficult to be someone who I am not. My character is also a fairly accurate representation of myself, obviously without the exaggerated features. I would partly agree with Epi that we all adapt to our surroundings, but that is normal human behaviour. That is not lying, that is just withholding certain information. Maybe it is just me but the way I speak to friends on here, the way I speak to colleagues in the office and the way I speak to offline friends is very similar. The only thing that changes is what you speak about.

Although I have no problem if people want to be someone completely different than they are in RL. After all that is part of the fun of RP, you can act out some of those inner most desires that are not possible in RL like having a female character as a male. Having said that we should always remember there are real people on the other side of the keyboard. If you are going to be someone else then make it clear in your profile, don't lead people on to be something you are not because that ultimately leads in someone getting hurt.

There has been a lot said in this thread and others that have been posted recently referring to things that have been said in here.

I would like to point out that for myself, I am not attacking role players, only what I believe to be a small percentage of them that say they are role playing when they are really doing something else.

I have mentioned a scenario where a 60 year old man playing a young girl and finding young lesbians to have sex with as an example, but it could be the opposite way around or a number of different scenarios where the player chooses to continue to play a role knowing it would matter to the other person.

I think one thing these players need to ask themselves is for example, if you are that 60 year old man playing a young lesbian girl and you find out that the young lesbian girl you have been role playing with turns out to be just like you, a 60 year old man. Would you then be happy to continue the role play? If the your answer is no, then you need to ask yourself are you role playing or doing something else.

hey, i dont feel like quoting the last 4-5 pages ~ 80/100 posts right now, but why dont we just sum it up in 3 categories, what we have here @ 3dx,  before we discuss it dead again and just let ppl post how the "play"?!

1) Roleplayers

2) People who are simply what they are, themselves

3) Fakes and liars...as best shown by DirkDig and posted in Describe 3DX With A Song as henry rollins already sung mid 90's

*best parts of the song*

I'll hide behind a smile
and understanding eyes

and I'll tell you things that you already know
so you can say
I really identify with you, so much

and all the time that you're needing me
is just the time that I'm bleeding you
don't you get it yet?
I'll come to you like an affliction
and I'll leave you like an addiction

you'll never forget me
you want to know why?
cause I'm a liar
yeah I'm a liar

ohh I am a liar
yeah
I lie
I lie
I lie

oh, I lie
oh I lie

I lie
yeah
ohhh I'm a liar
I lie
yeah
I like it
I feel good
I'll lie again
and again
I'll lie again and again
and I'll keep lying

I promise

have a nice summer

I'm perfectly fine with taking on a role for "scenario play", but generally play as myself. I respect however people want to play the game really, but I can see issues with jumping between alts, pretending to be a dif. person, and interacting with same people they usually do without them knowing it's the same person.

Many MMO's have accounts linked to a email, so even if it's dif characters, you can still see they are from the same account. I guess that would sort the socalled "liars", but limit the freedom ofcourse.

I always just be myself and express myself how I would if I was in that situation. It's just easier for me. :-) If there's a need for a little RP I'm fine with that too. ;x I guess I probably prefer it if the person I'm with is similarly likeminded, but I'm super easy going, so most things are okay. ^_^

  • 2 weeks later...
At the same time, there is the much more unsettling opposite idea of the domination of my screen persona over my "real" self. Our social identity, the person we assume to be in our social intercourse, is already a "mask" that involves the repression of our inadmissible impulses. But it is precisely in the conditions of "just playing" - when the rules regulating our "real life" exchanges are temporarily suspended - that we can permit ourselves to display these repressed attitudes. Take the proverbial impotent shy person who, while participating in a cyberspace interactive game, adopts the identity of an irresistible seducer or sadistic murderer. It is all too simple to say that this identity is just an imaginary escape from real-life impotence. The point is rather that, since he knows that the cyberspace interactive game is "just a game," he can "show his true self" and do things he would never have done in real-life interactions. In the guise of a fiction, the truth about himself is articulated. The fact that I perceive my virtual self-image as mere play thus allows me to suspend the usual hindrances which prevent me from realising my "dark half" in real life. My electronic id is given wing. :) :)

I can't say that I came into the game totally as myself. . .  there are things about myself that I would rather not say.  However. . . as I progressed in the game and made real friends. . . I slowly revealed to them the person I actually am.  Even furthar into the game
I met the man of my dreams. . . the game then became my reality.  Now that reality has extended way beyond the window of 3DX
and my life has become an open book for my man.  He is part of my daily life.  So it really depends on the nature of every friendship in the game as to how much of myself I wish to share and thus my friends list in game has become very important. The man I met in 3DX taught me that friendship is the foundation for EVERYTHING.

I'm playing this game now for almost a year.

My main avi is quite Close to what I am. Even if I don't like to talk ingame about me RL. But still it makes it very easy for me to Play and act.

But I've got avis that I don't want to post here, because they're fare from my personality. But as I'm not into relationship with this avis and don't try to Play with the emotions of others I think it's okay. Because if I'd reveal that's me, I couldn't slip into the role of those - less socialising but more sexualizing - avis.

I think the important Thing is not to fool around with the Emotion of others - and that I really know to avoid.

I find it is to hard to play or act as anyone else but myself.  The game has a lot of social parts, for that reason being yourself seem to be the best way to make and keep friends.  However, each person joins the game for different reason, we all need to respect that.
