You're responding as if I want to remove all nameplates globally, but that's not at all what I said... This was an effect that builders had to specifically craft their rooms around, it took some planning and effort on their parts, to lower the sealevel, get the relevant hidden portions of their build down to the appropriate z-height, and then in some cases restore the sealevel again to benefit from the dappled-sunlight effect... This created an intentional level of anonymity in a single room, or zones of a room when linked by teleporters. It was never a global effect, I never asked for it to become a global effect, all I asked for was that a similar functionality be given to builders again so that they can make anonymous rooms, or better still anonymous zones within rooms, like they used to.
Lunarelf already described how that kind of anonymity was being gamified to create interesting experiences which we simply can't have anymore. If I go to a Hunt Room for example, it's not a question of weather I can turn off nameplates to show or hide people, the issue is that it's currently impossible to have any confidence that other people can't see me... You see the difference?
As for your example of wanting to meet with friends and being unable to see them because their nameplates are hidden; well you presumably wouldn't be picking a known anonymous room to meet them in at all, would you? Not unless there was a compelling gameplay reason for doing so?... You'd go to Havasu, or a club, or the vast majority of worlds which aren't intentionally using the nameplate hiding feature.
