3DXChat Development Update 1

Hello everyone! We wanted to update you on the latest developments of our game. We have started a blog to keep you informed and hope you enjoy it.

In November 2022, we did a comprehensive survey with NoirDesire to gather feedback on the game's quality. While we are still processing the results, NoirDesire kindly shared some interim feedback. We have gained insight into players' thoughts on crucial aspects, such as game bugs and features they would like added.

Most players, like us, desire a more stable game. We will make this our top priority.

To accomplish this, we are currently porting the game to a newer version of the Unity engine. The new engine will allow us to benefit from the many improvements and refinements that Unity developers have made over the past few years. Since the game is currently using an outdated 2018 version of the engine, we have decided to update this platform first.

While porting the game to the new engine, some systems have broken. We have been able to fix nearly all of them and even enhance some. For instance, the beer-drinking system was broken; we have entirely revamped it and added new types of drinks and food. As you drink, you will notice the liquid level in the bottle decreases, and bits of food vanish from your plate. Additionally, we have added the ability to toss the bottle out of the character's hand.

We have included pictures/videos of the drink and food system for you.

We plan to conduct a beta test of the new client once we have migrated to the new Unity engine.

Stay tuned for more updates on the progress of 3DXChat development!

I will not comment on the pose editor at this time. The time has not yet come.

I understand what you mean by "there was a new clothing system, with for instance adjustable length of pants". Our research on this system has been put on hold due to higher priorities. We may revisit the idea later. But there is no development in that direction at the moment.

Dear @Gizmo,

let me see if I get this right: The poll for the pose editor was on March, 24th in 2018, 5 years ago and now it is still too early to speak about it? Over a year later, on Septemer, 1st in 2019 you still wrote about this feature and suddenly it is too early? Really that?

Poll for the pose editor: https://3dxforum.com/index.php?/topic/6540-pose-editor/

Mentioning of the pose editor again: https://3dxforum.com/index.php?/topic/9070-what-is-ghost-partner-from-mods/&do=findComment&comment=351842

Instead of getting the pose editor done, we suddenly have been informed about work on customizable clothes is in progress and we would be kept updated. This was on June, 15th in 2019. Without any notice we never heard of it again until now, then you suddenly mention some vague higher priorities that stopped the work. Only after more than 3 years some vague statement? Again: Really that?

Work in progress:

I am sorry, but this all looks like Xaufin is correct: There have been some enthusiastic statements but than you found it all beyond your possibilities and skills but instead to say "sorry, I cannot do it" we hear some vague words about "time not come yet" and "higher priorities" after years. Explicit not answering does not change the fact these features have been mentioned and we never got any status information.

On December, 22th 2022 you informed about holidays but then work on bugfixes. Well okay, we all have holidays. But on February, 24th 2023 you already wrote in your answer for me, the Unity engine upgrade was almost done. Almost done in just 2 month, great! But now in May, again 2 month later all is suddenly back to the normal silence, no more information, not any visible outcome. I really would expect, when after 2 monthe something is nearly done, that after 4 month there is an visible result r information.

Maybe this helps you to understand why the reliability of your company is not given anymore: Again we are left alone without any reasonable news about when the update will come, again we are left alone with all the bugs which make virtual community living in 3DXChat more and more impossible and leave the field to the ones who just need some quick animation for masturbation. - Maybe this is all you need for your income but the social users paid too and they got promises of an update with bug fixes which means they payed for what you promised, bug fixes as well as features! But it is all back to silence now. Why? I assume you ran into trouble an the bug fixes are hard, because of the given structure of the software but anyway, they have been promised. So, when after 2 month there was the developer blog, why is there no more information after next 2 month?

Some of my friends have an old pc. They fear that with the new engine they will no longer be able to move on the new 3dx
because it's too "heavy", I hope this doesn't happen

i doubt that the new engine will have an effect on users with low end pcs. Sure there will be bugs that will come up and im 100% positive that the team will get on it quickly to ensure that the game is running smoothly for everyone :)

I do get the frustration and all that. We all paid money for this better communication is needed for this. I absolutely agree. But we do need to remember. This isn't some AAA studio company. It's not like activision working on it. Hell Activision makes millions and they still put out products with tons of bugs in them. I can only imagine companies with a small dev team working on the project. Just something to keep in mind about it all.

Then they should better stop to promise things they do not keep! I do no way accept any further excuses of not fixed major bugs since years! Even if it is not an AAA company, there is no excuse of having done nothing on major bugs that are reported since years!

I'm unclear about what was said about new Unity engine. But I work professionally in Unity, so I'll give some clarification on what could be happening.

Updating to a newer version of Unity Engine means going from 2019.4.1f1 to 2021.1.5f1 (for example). This is done essentially by two steps:
1. Clicking Yes to a popup that says Update your project to 20xx.x.x?
2. Clicking Yes to another popup that says This could break your entire project. Are you sure?

This type of upgrade takes a few minutes and 50% of the time will not break anything if it was from, say, version 45 to 46. But if you skip dozens of versions, as live operating games unfortunately have to do, there is a much greater chance that things will break.
Step 3. Fix all the things that broke, which could take weeks or months.

What they could have meant by new version is changing the rendering pipeline. Unity has three rendering options:

  • Built-in / Traditional: Unity's standard rendering they've had for many years. (3DX uses this)
  • URP (Universal Render Pipeline): best for work across many platforms, including mobile. (since 2018)
  • HDRP (High Definition Render Pipeline): For photoreal AAA graphics, basically 95% or greater of what Unreal Engine would provide (since 2018)

Updating to these pipelines would guarantee that all art assets are broken and need to be remade or adapted, possibly as easy as assigning new shaders, maybe much more complicated. Again, this would take weeks or months.

I hope Gizmo will clarify which type of Engine change is happening. A render pipeline upgrade is not necessary to provide better graphics, and 3DX uses far too much CPU/GPU for being on the Built-in pipeline anyway, so ideally optimization happens before then.

This thread is the most communication I've ever seen from Gizmo, so it was a great start. Hoping to hear more.

Given the number of players in 3DX, there is at least enough money for 2 or 3 people to work full-time, unless they owe some investors like 80% of their revenue. So I do hope full-time is what's being worked.

EDIT: They may also be doing both migration to a newer version and a newer render pipeline, which could take twice as much time.

4 months after your presentation still not on the official server... should I be surprised. I do not think so 😇

Right, it is the usual: Some simple updates with even more and never fixed bugs around Christmas, little statements around Easter and then nothing except marketing which can bring more users and more money.

Well, they obviously they earn enought money, so why change it? It's frustrating for us, but not for them.

if they need extra money to pay the servers and debt from sponsor like lovense, they can just giving us some extra/vip contents to buy/ selling some custom designs other than xgolds, no one will be mad with that since this is the game we love afterall. But merchandising? After whole five month? To sell something people may not interested to buy? Instead of the update which most of the contents seems pretty done?

nice merchandising, I love modded skyrim :>

Honestly, I don't get this take.

I mean "instead" part in particular.

Migrating game to another engine can take months of work as @Xaufin said.

Making a merch post will take... how much? A hour of time? Anyway, I pretty much doubt Gizmo writing merchandise posts himself, probably partners just asked him to post it - and why not if it provides game with more money and causes no harm...

fun fact: there is already 'months' passed and it's only an engine update, not changing. It could take some time, but it's unnormal to be more than 2 months. And also: they did released at least a playable/ displayable version on April Fools day. It have to be done after the unity version updates or the whole thing won't make any sence( Make all this before update unity=make more bugs and errors to fix ).

AAAnd... for the "instead", I'm not sure if giz and other devs having any known about the depression and negative emotions spreading around the forum, but a merch is definitely something could raise this situation to a more severely level. even it's because the partner wants him to do, but instead of communication he just dropped those official ads...not pretty cheerful eh? An hour or even just 10 minutes effort will make crowds gets more grumpy and feelings abandoned, and that's kinda how the things goes: players who's waiting for update are just like some abandoned/neglected kids, trying anything to raise attention from their parents, but non of them really cares.

anyway... since the update is still not arrived, let's hope giz is preparing some huge surprise for all of us, we still have chance eh?

I dunno, I am not game developer myself. Are you?

If we believe Xaufin's words it can take up to several months if things not going smoothly and they obviously has some theory and practice to back up these words, and I have an internet friend who works with Unity and I heard something close to that info from him as well when I was asking questions. So I kinda see no reason not to believe this information.

Depression is a big word. We are talking about game. Yeah, a game that makes people emotionally involved a lot, but still a game. If someone really getting depressed because of lack of update in a game they clearly should check their life priorities. But I sure can understand that people feeling some negative emotions about it, I am a little frustrated myself, not gonna lie.

Though I don't really understand what you expect from devs here. They have a business partner. They most probably have some kind of a contract with their partner, that involves some kind of obligations and responsibilities. What do you expect from 3dxchat's team? Tell Lovense "Hey guys, we know that we have a contract and stuff but we will not post advertisement because people on our forum feeling depressed about lack of update, so we will not be posting anything till update released!"

I mean... It does not really work like this.

well... that's what you said tho, I'm not and never gonna say they shouldn't put a merch, what I mean it's "not a good time" especially when giz is playing ded for several months on his blog and shows no response, then it's not a perfect time to just throw a merch and back to afk—— but he do leave something about update here yesterday , so... it's not totally bad. Also I'm using depress as an emotion not cultural, and not medical.

I'm not a professional developer myself also, but I do used unity a little so I understand it could take some time for debug everything. But since this blog is used for exhibit and show what they've done, it's not making sence if they just make update contents before upgrade the engine, and those contents are done since start of the year. Then... 5 months it's a little too... long? for just debugging and fixing. But it could make sence if they really do everything before upgrade the engine...... that may explained why they spend a lot of time on this upgrading.

I've been here roughly 2 years and in that time, the February blog post was the only substantial communication I'd ever seen here. That post was the first point in a trend, so there's no pattern to predict an actual timeline of updates. However I think quarterly would be reasonable.
Either way, an estimate for the next update or patch would be ideal so people know how long they're waiting.

The merch advertisement isn't really connected to development in any way though, so those posts don't really merit any additional dev updates.

Dear 3DXChat Team, @Gizmo

I would like to offer some suggestions to further improve the game experience for our players.

Here are my recommendations:

- Improving mirror material reflections: It has been confirmed by Lisa on March 5, 2019, that the mirrors in the game lack real-time planar reflections. I highly recommend addressing this issue as it would significantly enhance the visual experience for players. By accurately reflecting the surrounding environment, mirrors can add an extra layer of realism and immersion to the game world.

- Implementing a working digital clock: Since the game is built on the new Unity version, it presents an excellent opportunity to introduce a feature that displays a clock synchronized with the client's local time. This addition would allow players to seamlessly see the actual local time within the game, further immersing them in the virtual environment. It would be ideal to implement this functionality as a versatile material that can be applied to any object, ensuring ease of integration and customization.

- Enabling image uploading for custom objects: Currently, there are limitations on the number of objects that can be placed in a room, particularly when it comes to non-default objects. To address this limitation and provide players with more creative freedom, I propose allowing users to upload images as materials that can be applied to any object. This innovation would enable players to effortlessly create custom signs, rules, or images without the need to painstakingly create multiple shapes to form a single letter. Furthermore, this enhancement would eliminate the dependence on third-party applications such as "Tamara World Picture" and optimize the game's performance by reducing the number of objects required to display a single picture.

- Introducing camera restrictions for private areas: Instead of entirely disabling the free camera as many users had suggested, I suggest implementing a feature that allows players to restrict access to private areas. This functionality can be accomplished by introducing a material that can be applied to objects, functioning similarly to the invisible wall material. When this material is applied to specific areas, it would prevent the camera from entering those private spaces while still enabling players to freely move their avatars. By providing this more flexible and customizable approach to protecting private areas, we can offer a heightened sense of privacy and security within the game world.

Sincerely,
XxPLAYBOYxX
