Forum - a meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.

"we hope these pages act as a forum for debate"

Passionate but possibly flawed argument revealing bias. Demand for action that is unlikely to occur.

Indignant response taking a bafflingly personal offense that the OP is concerned with one particular issue, rather than the responder's own individual pet problem which is far more urgent to responder.

Question -  Why cant personal issues or disputes be discussed and resolved in private?

If the answer is an Ignore - then that is the resolution. One party does not wish to continue, nor take part in any further drama.  Full Stop. End of.

And if that is the case ... why then do said parties think its ok to publisise said dispute on forum...  to goad the party who does not wish to talk on it anymore / to continue the drama ? Or to let the rest of the 3dchat world know?

In case anyone does not understand the latter -   The rest of 3d does not want to know, nor gives a flying fuck about personal hissy fits at all.

The only issues that should be publisised are when there is a public interest to the rest of Forum ... like stealing other member's creations!

Here we go again..

Troll gif followed by pithy quip, accompanied by explanation of how everyone should stop bumping the thread, concluded by message to other troll who isn't in the thread yet about something unrelated, or possibly poking fun at op by calling the thread pointless and predicting future thread deletion because of the controversiality and pointlessness.

Honestly I hope that if people have to make a post about something controversial and the topics seem to be: Djing, Gender, Rape, and maybe Pandora; they would make a detailed description of what they think the solution is in their post instead of just throwing it out as troll bait and saying this is bad.

In terms of the now famous rape thread which started before Christmas, a solution was very much discussed from the start (in terms of rape rp rooms being banned in accordance to the ToS). And that just seemed to send the trolls into a feeding frenzy like there was no tomorrow.

Ummm ....... errrrrr ......................... I think I have to say this even though it's not quite following the irony and humour of the topic. I coul;dn't quite work that bit in, sorry,

Asking other users for opinions and ideas anout an issue or problem before moving on to a concensus about possible solutions.

No I think it needs to be the other way around if you identify a issue but have no solution that isn't worth discussing. There has to be a starting position. Otherwise your just giving the thread to the trolls from the start to make it whatever they like. I don't see why this is a difficult concept its the basics of debate I think.

If you have a solution there's not point in disucssing it, surely? It becomes like those awful meetings where the boss demands you take an hour out from doing stuff you need to do to hear him say something he could have put in an email you could have read in five minutes.

Edit here 'cos I got sidetracked by rl - isn't debate about thesis, antithesis, synthesis ---> new thesis, antithesis, synthesis ........ and so on until a secure thesis (theory) is discovered? OMG put liek that it sounds like Trotsky's theory of permanent revolution ..................... lolol. Heavy stuff for a Saturday night and after a couple of glasses of good Argentinian Malbec.

If you don't say exactly what you think will work as a fix, but are really passionate about an issue which there is nothing wrong with I might add. People are going to read your posts and guess at what your think and what they come up with might not be what your really thinking.

We're drifting away from the light hearted bit, but I do honestly believe that most problems can be resolved by people talking through things and reaching some kind of agreement. For example, and it's not one I see as important but it'll do, there's been some discussion about people wanting more poses rather than stuff to build things with. Some people like the poses to trigger their imaginations some people don't. Some people like to build, some people are crap at it, like me. An honest discussion gives the devs a sense of how  people overall feel about the two views and can direct their attention to one rather than the other.

Sort of like once a synthesis is reached it can be tested and if good the devs can get on with that instead of playing Plants v Zombies knowing it'll be welcomed by the community.

I hate doing double posts but your response came and went while I was checking my spelling and stuff.

I think I get where you're coming from, Niblette, like you're saying that if people don't know where you're going directly then there's a good chance they'll grab the wrong end of the stick. The idea of going in to a debate thinking you have the answers really goes against the grain with me. Like it's about trying to open you mind to new ideas, new solutions, new opinions. For myself, I'd sooooo hate to miss that.

I do think its nice they are asking about that I suppose, I don't really care to much about more pre-made poses, but for me I think a poses editor would be nice since it would allow custom furniture and stuff like that. I do think that's a good example of a place where consensus from the community is nice it lets the devs know what to add. I am just not sure I agree though that its the same when its about punishing people in that case I think a mob rule situation doesn't works well and I think that it should be left up to the devs more to judge but I do think its helpful to bring solutions to their and the community attention, and yes people can jump to all types of wrong conclusions on here since we are quite limited on how we communicate.

Point taken Niblette, but .................... there's always one of those :-). To my mind the problem isn't the debae itself or the topics discussed, more that certain people will do their utmost to prevent any sort of debate. What is good is that the moderators have taken a robust stand on this. While it could be argued they've not got it quite right the message is clear. The will remove people from the forums if they do not behave in a manner that conforms to the rules they set. I hope this will continue and will enable discussion about the widest possible range of topics without the bullying that has blighted the forums for too long.

Fingers crossed for the future.

Here's an attempt to come up with something in line with where this started - passionately held, honest opinions expressed with a sense of fairness commandeered by people who want to show their dislike of somebody.

Not every post that is "controversial" is over a personal dispute. This thread was about what was going on on the forum about a year ago. The threads that it was referring to were more like your example of room stealing and most ended up deleted. It doesn't really reflect the current situation on the forum which has been mostly quiet and there wasn't really any need to bring it up.

The thing is without moderation anyone can post what they like, within the rules. I’m not saying I agree with it. There are threads I don’t like and behaviour I don’t like but who the fuck cares?

Who decides what’s “public interest”? Not me.
