The British and Snow

I was excited this morning by a yellow snow warning. When it fell it was white just like normal. So far about half a centimetre has settled and the local radio reports chaos and panic buying in town.

Yah, i have that snow.  I just laugh.  Been living in the UK for over 20 years.  I use to live in the North East of the states where it snowed a lot.  Normal winter weather was 3 + feet of snow and driving in it was fun.  But here in the UK where 3 cementers the country comes to a stop.  Schools close, public builds close normal work places close. Whats going on?   Its only a little snow.  The rest of the world just gets on with it. Please get over it.

We have an amber snow warning for tomorrow. Best not get my hopes up that it’ll be anything other than white. Yeah, I know we Brits are pretty bad at snow.

Six or seven years ago we had serious snow and the village was cut off because a snow plough got stuck and blocked the main road. The local pub organised those of us with 4x4’s to do stuff like take people to appointments, get groceries and stuff.

The British don’t half go on about it when it falls but in fairness we don’t have the resources to deal effectively with snow and it’s not worth investing in the infrastructure to do so when it’s such a rare occurrence.

So maybe our whining, though it looks ridiculous to most other nations, is legitimate.

To be serious a mo, does anybody round here keep hens in cold climates. Like it’s so cold here atm that my hens water keeps freezing over. Is there anything I can do other than keep bringing one of their drinkers in the house to thaw out alternately?

They’ve spent the day trying to avoiding walking in the snow, they must have cold feet, poor things.

Put antifreeze in the water.

not to be rude or anything, but did you do any research on raising chickens before getting some?  chickens are not fragile creatures that need people to look after them; they've developed over millenia, and have not only survived, but flourished without human intervention...  they have plenty of feathers to provide them with warmth, and on colder days will huddle together...  heaters and such are not necessary...  the waterers keep freezing over?  welcome to the real world...  if they freeze over you bring them fresh water that is not frozen;  that's how it goes if you want to raise chickens...  i give then warm water, and by warm i mean testing the baby bath water with your elbow warm, in the morning and before i go to bed...  if they don't like to walk in the snow it is because they are just like any other creature: some will do it, and some won't...  i have chickens that have no problem walking about in 6" of snow at 15 degrees F, and others that won't leave the coop in 1" when it is 30F, go figure...  if you want them out in the snow, throw out some corn;  as soon as one starts pecking at it, the rest will follow...

When I was a little girl, back in the days when milk was delivered to your doorstep whatever the weather, I remember that in cold weather blue tits would peck their way in to the milk bottles and drink the rich cream off the top. I must have been very tiny at the time but I seem to remember one winter when most of Dartmoor, in the south west of England, was cut off and the army had to helicopter in food for the animals up there. Even farmers couldn't get about with their tractors.

Where I live snow is a rarity and temperatures hardly ever fall below freezing. When it does it is never for more than a few hours. The temperature has been below freezing for two days now, my home town is silent as people stay in doors trying to keep warm.

Does Coffee and BJs really not want to be rude? I don't think that using slightly warm water would make a significant difference. The latent heat of fusion of water is so much greater than the heat capacity of water. It might make half an hour difference before it freezes, I wouldn't have thought much more. I am changing the water for my garden birds every hour or two and have made sure there is plenty of high energy food out there for them. So far this morning I have had two robins, I'm hoping they're a pair and will nest, sparrows, tits and black caps.

I reported this post this morning and it's preyed on my mind since. I'm going to explain why I thought it was confrontational. If Coffee and BJs had said 'don't worry, in my experience hens cope very well with cold weather. Just make sure they have food and their water isn't frozen' I'd not have thought anything more of it. The use of phrases like 'not to be rude or anything', 'did you do any research on raising chickens' and 'welcome to the real world' tells me that Coffee and BJs is saying something else as well. I could be wrong but I remember seeing the phrase 'go figure' in there as well, but that seems to have gone. I believe the post was less giving a bit of useful advice and more trying to make the person asking for advice look, or feel, small.

Snow continues to fall on the south coast of England, somewhere between Penzance and Poole. Schools have been closed all day, the buses in my road haven't run, local radio reports tell people not to travel with road closures due to accidents. Some main roads in my area haven't been gritted and are unsafe. Fortunately snow is very rare in this part of the country but local councils are unable to cope well when it does.

I heard on the news today that the sea was freezing off the Isle of Wight. There have also been reports of power cuts in parts of the country. Does anybody know more? Good news is that the temperature will rise in a few hours.

Sorry but logging a report for that was stupid and unnecessary. For goodness sake, do we now get all het up because someone used some of the phrases the previous poster used? That undermines the report system.

I’m also suspicious of your motives and identity, given where you seem to imply that you live. Is the world really that small? I also don’t recall you posting on the rape thread as you claimed you did on another thread.

Maybe time you were honest about who you are.

Reporting is excessive even though it was phrased to be confrontational

Is that a question or statement?

No ? mark

Was agreeing with your point about reporting but saying Coffee’s post was deliberately confrontational still

Agreed. But wow if we report every snide comment on here...

Salt? Would they still drink it?

Or you could warm the chicken instead of the water, I recommend this
