Personal experience anyone?

Hey if anyone has personal experience of taking carbamazepine (Tegretol) and doesn't mind talking to me about the side effects, could you pm me pls?

Mods pls don't take down this, it's a legit question about prescription meds as I need an opinion other than my doctor's and don't know anyone irl who can help. Thx.

Thanks for that Bree. Trouble is these sites always report the worst case scenario which is why it'd be useful to hear from someone who has taken the stuff as sometimes the reality is better than the writing on the label. All I know is my doc has said these are serious drugs.

this may not help but here are some user reviews  from people who have taken it, might be interesting to read until you find someone with experience taking it. i will add that one size doesnt fit all, what you may feel is not what another will so what the average person feels matters very little in terms of what you will go through on it

Thanks rob :)

you could see another doc for a second opinion

Thanks for the suggestion :) ; don't need a second opinion atm, just a case of knowing what I'm letting myself in for if I start the meds.

As an aspiring bio-chemist I would be a little cautious about anecdotal advice beccie...and even about offering any advice myself on how it works etc...this family of drugs can be used to treat a whole range of different conditions but I'm sure you know that...info is all over the Internet on its common uses.

However your experience of it is likely to be mostly unique...influenced by your own biochemistry...lifestyle...diet...other medicines...and even the reason it was prescribed for you in the first place. As it's been prescribed to you I would honestly suggest trialling it and keeping a record of changes or things you notice. It's easy to forget little details once you're into a treatment and you get "used" to certain stuff by the time you go back to see your doc.

Be a little scientist...keep notes and then review with your doctor...if you don't like their opinion...or don't trust it...as Rob says...get a second opinion. Trust how YOU feel about it...under its effects. You...know you...best.

Totally understand your point Doll and thanks for your advice :)

As an 'aspiring biochemist' you'll know ofc that drugs manufacturers mention every potential side effect known to man, even if these are relatively rare. So if 4 people say to me they had few noticeable side effects and 1 suffered, then that is ofc reassuring... though I recognise I might be the unlucky one... But if 4 people say they were wiped out by the side effects and only 1 was fine, that sends me a warning message.

Yeah I hear ya :) they have to tell you every possible thing so you can't sue them when you barf...fall over...your hair falls out etc.. ;) ...and depends why your doc prescribed it for you but this can be a bit of a...you really shouldn't NOT take this...depending.

Anyways...no harm in seeing what the majority view is I just wouldn't let it influence my approach too much. Hope it is all ok for you though hon *mwah*

As someone with a pharmacology degree, I'll second this.

I think we're just trying to offer honest advice but I can see it's being misinterpreted I'm sorry...I don't think anything was meant to be condescending or critical.

Edited - cos misreading tones and stamping my foot too much lol...and I don't want a "noogie" from Rob :P

I usually talk to the pharmacist about possible side effects and if they know cases of those with issues. They don't have to give private personal info about anyone to give general statistics. Of course if you don't trust the pharmacist to give it to you straight, I do hope you find someone who's taking it.
