What is Roleplaying

First off like to introduce myself, I am an amateur writer, a Guild Master of a large guild on another venue that is rather old, I am also a gamer with a decade of experience in different MMOs. So I been around for a while to see this debate. In my own guild we have issues arise as certain types of RP clash with others, we are human and we take pride in our creativity, it happens. The key thing is that we remember not every one Role Plays and not every one does it the same. So what is Role Playing?

-children on a school ground pretending to be a flock of Gulls
-Some one walking into a restaurant, giving the front hostess a different name in an accent that is not theirs
-It can be actors in a play
-it can be comedians doing improv
-It can be two lovers playing out fantasies with each other

Many of us do it as well every day on small scales, either playing a role of that confident persona to over come small fears even though is side we are shivering with doubt, we play the fool for loved ones, belittling ourselves to help them laugh or smile, we even may lie to others, coming up with reason we where late for an appointment because well it wasn't that important to us but it would hurt them to know how  little we cared. Truth is Role Play is as old as Greece when Theaters where first introduced, authors role play in their heads the creations the wish to bring to life in novels. So to those that dislike role players, try to realize with out people that are willing to dance in their imaginations you would not be able to enjoy so much creativity in your life, just as we understand that this world needs the more concrete persona's you need us as well. Instead of calling us liar, deceivers take a moment and realize how this world would be with out entertainers.

So with that said when I first came here I played a role, it was fun as I met others that enjoyed doing the same. Wrote several short stories with people, wrote a lot of private dances, wrote a short love story with another then I felt it was time for a break. that to me is Role Play but I also know my style annoys others as it tend to be rather descriptive and 3-4 post makes for a long read. I have good friends that are more the improv style of RP hat post one-two lines of banter and well it makes me laugh my ass off reading it, any was just be careful trying to claim what is right and wrong in RP, I seen people do this in the past and destroy growing interest in the art, instead just shush, relax and watch, see if there is something you enjoy about the new style, if not smile, walk away, though maybe if you give it a chance you will be surprised, maybe. I rambled enough so thanks if you read my nonesense :)

so what is your point then? Not trying to be a troll or rude, I am just wondering?

I been here for a year now and seen several threads open up as well as carry on for pages where inside you find post belittling RPers. So I wanted to open one up where RPers can explain to every one what it is to them so people can better understand. Right now if an RPer came to these forums looking to see if this game was RP friendly they would be turned away for the most part, seeing some of the hottest threads calling them liars, they simply would not want the drama, Partly why other venues like Final Fantasy as well as other MMOs have a higher eRP base then 3DX. I like to see that change a little.

I fortunately haven't run into anyone belittling roleplayers since I've been around but am sorry you've experienced that! I'm pretty easy going and tend to roll with whatever my playmates are game for, but I love roleplaying and the more descriptive the better. :) I hope you keep it up, inspire more folks to join in, and that I get to bump into you all soon!

As much as I would like people to understand RP. It's a lost cause in this game. Power to you though Ero for attempting. I gave up long ago, stick to the cliques that understand how it all works. If those people can't research on there own, they wont figure it out from a sex game forum is my entire outlook on it now.

I also will add that i've seen your style of RP, I am not a fan of it. I think multi paras in a public setting is more of a book than roleplay. Quick back and forth is what I always go for. I do multi paras in private, but speed and back and forth is what I always tend to enjoy it also keeps people interacted. The huge walls of text is a big thing in WoW lately with the WIM mod, makes me sad when people take 10 minutes to post 4 blocks of text is why I really dislike the style.

In any case any RP is good RP to me, so whether you multi-para or a few sentences. As long as they are literate I can be a happy camper.

I have close friends that love the banter style, quick delivers and responses much like you find in a improv club which is rather fun to be a part of and watch. Often find myself engulfed in their style as well at times, its fun to just go with the flow some times. But no worries I understand fully that some people just don't enjoy descriptive RP, some times I am not in the mood for it either.

I've seen the attacks you mention... Personally I think they are not understanding the difference between someone that rps and someone that manipulates, lies and deceives in order to harm others or get what they want regardless of the harm it does to the person behind the screen.

Added into that is the whole gender identity issue of course.

I think that to some extent everyone here role plays, well - everyone that is worth getting intimate with anyway. Most don't do full role play, all the time and I've seen discussion where it's suggested that then you don't fit into some ridiculous definition of what role play is, but to me it's a question of degree.

i myself mix and match, I like to describe, I like to rp my actions and play along with interesting scenarios but I like to talk too.

But what I never do is rp with the feelings of others or my own feelings. I've been told way too many times "I love you" so I do not say it unless I feel it.
